Flower & season tiles 花牌
Beyond the suits and honours, a Taiwanese set carries eight bonus tiles: four flowers and four seasons. They never form part of your 16-tile hand — each is set aside and replaced the moment you draw it — but every one scores a bonus point.
The four flowers
- Plum 梅 · méi
- Orchid 蘭 · lán
- Chrysanthemum 菊 · jú
- Bamboo 竹 · zhú
The four seasons
- Spring 春 · chūn
- Summer 夏 · xià

How flowers score
Frequently asked
How many flower tiles are there in mahjong?
A Taiwanese set has eight bonus tiles: four flowers — plum (梅), orchid (蘭), chrysanthemum (菊) and bamboo (竹) — and four seasons — spring (春), summer (夏), autumn (秋) and winter (冬).
How do flower and season tiles score?
A flower or season is set aside when drawn and you take a replacement tile, so it never forms part of the 16-tile hand. Each one scores a bonus point, and the flower or season matching your seat scores an extra point.
